Philipp Sewerin

Dr. Philipp Sewerin is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Rheumatology at the University Hospital of Ruhr University Bochum in Herne, Germany.  In addition, he leads a working group on imaging in rheumatic diseases in the Hiller Research Unit for Rheumatology at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf, Germany.  He studied medicine at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany, and Zurich, Switzerland. He was awarded a PhD in 2013 for a thesis entitled “Effects of the prostaglandin analogue iloprost on proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal progenitor cells”.  This was followed by a second PhD entitled "The Significance of Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Diagnosis, Therapy Monitoring and Prediction of Inflammatory Rheumatic Joint Diseases", after which he was awarded the title of Professor (Ass.).

Dr. Sewerin’s principal research interests are in the field of biomarkers and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in inflammatory arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) and other rheumatic diseases.  He is a Principal Investigator or Sub-Investigator for more than 50 phase 2–4 clinical trials.  He is the musculoskeletal MRI expert for the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the ultrasound expert (particularly arthrosonography) at the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR).

Dr. Sewerin has published widely on imaging, RA and PsA, and is also a reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals, including BMC, Arthritis & Rheumatology, and Arthritis Research & Therapy, PloS one, JAMA, as well as being a member of the Editorial Board of Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
